felt compelled to share this ... had to read it & reflect on it for Dr. DeCaro's hermenutics class.
"Woe to you evangelicals" by Dr. Glen Shellrude (Assoc. Professor of New Testament @ Alliance Theological Seminary's Manhattan Campus).
You claim to have a high view of the authority of Scripture, but you ignore large sections of its teaching and often misinterpret it by reading your own ideas into the text.
In your theology of salvation, you say that it is all about faith and downplay the importance of a life of costly obedience.
You claim to have died to the world, but you are deeply committed to essentially secular ideologies on the left and right and are incapable of evaluating individual issues from a Gospel perspective.
You think that everything is fine with your walk with Me (Jesus) so long as you subscribe to the right theology.
You are critical of Roman Catholics for the importance they attach to 'tradition' ... but you also allow your inherited tradition to shape your understanding and practice of the Gospel.
You have refashioned the Gospel into the contemporary idiom of positive thinking and psychological self-help.
Your churches are essentially self-serving social support groups where there is little interest in reaching others with the Gospel or embracing My agenda of caring for the poor and needy.
You emphasize the importance of cross-cultural missions but a lot of your missionary work has more to do with ego gratification than enabling strategic ministries.
You rightly believe that the Scriptures instruct you in truth. But, this turns into a harsh judgmentalism of others coupled with a blindness to your own sin.
In shaping churches and Christian organizations you are more interested in institutional success and personal glory than connecting people with Me and honoring Me.
Secular culture is way ahead of you in empowering women for all roles in society and in defining the husband-wife relationship in egalitarian terms.
In your worship you are more interested in generating intense emotional highs and showing off your musicianship than worshipping Me.
You have no place for a theology of suffering in your understanding of the Christian life.
You teach that I am committed to ensuring your financial and personal prosperity. I have not once said this yet endless airtime is given to this heretical theology.
just some things to think about & discuss whether with the Lord or others around you!
